Shoot 3 (AT HOME)

Playing with Exposure (again)

In this assignment, we explored the impact of exposure on photographic composition. The task was to experiment with different levels of exposure by intentionally creating overexposed and underexposed shots. The aim was to observe how varying light levels influence the mood, clarity, and overall visual balance of an image, but this time at home.

The exposure is set for the darker, ambient parts of the scene, which causes the brightest elements the lights on the stall to become washed. This means a complete loss of detail turning this into pure white areas. However, this approach makes the details in the shadows and the background clearly visible.

Original

the exposure is set correctly for the brightest part of the image (the stall's lights), preserving all the detail within them, prioritizing the frame (the lights), the shadows and the darker background are dark as hell, meaning they lose all detail and merge into black.

The first image is highly overexposed, causing the lights to appear blown out and creating strong glare with bright, scattered reflections that dominate the frame. This reduces detail in the lamp shades but adds a dramatic, abstract quality through the radiating light patterns.

In contrast, this one, preserves more texture and definition in the lamp covers while muting the reflections. The darker exposure creates a moodier, more focused composition where the lamps themselves stand out as the central subject without distraction from excessive light scatter.

Overall Learning

from this comparison i learnt that exposure plays a crucial role in shaping both the mood and focus of an image. Overexposure can create abstract, atmospheric effects by emphasizing light and reflections but may sacrifice detail, while underexposure preserves texture and form, resulting in a more intimate and defined composition. Adjusting exposure is therefore not just a technical choice but also an artistic tool to control how viewers perceive and engage with the subject.

Overall Observation

one thing that i observed is that when the same subject, when captured under different exposures, presents entirely different visual experiences one leaning towards a bright, abstract play of light and reflections, and the other towards a darker, more detailed and structured depiction. This highlights how exposure directly influences the balance between atmosphere and clarity in a composition.
